Hagane no Renkin Jutsushi (Fullmetal Alchemist) Ep 28 - Ichi wa Zen, Zen wa Ichi (One is all, all is one)

Izumi decides to let Ed and Al stay on a desserted island for 1 month to cool down and think about their next course of action. She also forbids them to use alchemy to survive which makes Winry worried about their safety. However, the brothers had managed to stay on this island safe and sound for 1 month when Izumi left them there during the probation period of their training and after all these years, living on this island no longer makes the brothers uneasy. In actual fact, they feel nostalgic about returning to this place which holds many memories...

Ed suddenly comes up with the idea of escaping from the island but Al reminds him that he can't swim and they no longer have their bodies like before. As such, Ed gives up the thought of cheating. Unknown to them, there is someone on this island who is observing them secretly.

When the brothers first followed Izumi home for the training, she brought them to the island and gave them a dagger only. Upon hearing that they had to fend for themselves with no food, water and shelter for 1 month, the brothers were stunned. In addition, Izumi told them to think of the meaning behind the sentence, "One is all and all is one" when she came back for them before they could become her students officially. On the first night of their stay on the island, they could not get a good night's sleep as they were attacked by a masked man and had to worry about their safety while waiting for daybreak.

The brothers decided to set a trap to catch some animals for food and got a rabbit. However, just as they were deliberating on how to kill the rabbit, a fox came to grab it and even bit Ed on his arm when he tried to snatch the rabbit back. They lost their appetite for meat when they saw how disgusting the fox and its children ate the rabbit live. They managed to get some fish from the sea but before they could eat it, the masked man appeared and they had to go without food again.

Al catches some fishes using his armour easily and grills it over a fire. He goes to look for Ed to eat the fishes but does not know that someone is observing his activities from afar. Al brings Ed back to the campfire site and questions why he only munched part of the fishes and let the rest go to waste but Ed says that he hasn't done anything. As such, they decide to walk around the island to find out if there's anyone around besides them.

Back to the time when Ed and Al were kids, they tried their very best to survive on the island by making their own shelter, fishing for food and defending themselves from the masked man. After a while, Ed and Al started to wonder the purpose of their stay on the island even though they wanted to learn alchemy and this trip seemed to have no relation with that. At a point, they had wanted to give up but they refused to do so as they had promised Pinako and Winry that they won't be sent home within one month and had to achieve their goal of resurrecting their mother.

During one of their clashes with the masked man, Ed happened to see ants feeding on the corpse of a dead insect and seemed to realise that death was related to the question which Izumi threw at them. The brothers finally found out that the sentence referred to the food chain where each living thing was dependent on another to survive despite one another's small existence on this large world. When Izumi came to pick the brothers up, they answered that one referred to oneself while all referred to the world which was like alchemy where you needed something to create another. As such, Izumi finally accepted them as students...

Ed and Al recollect their past as Ed remarks that they should have given up resurrecting their mother at that time after knowing the meaning of "one is all and all is one". Al remarks that Izumi's intention in letting them stay on the island is to let them think over whether to proceed with their goal of regaining their bodies as this might result in a worse outcome than the current situation. However, they wish to rectify their mistakes and move on from the past regardless of what happens. Just then, Izumi realises that there is someone around and Ed and Al think that the person could be the masked man who appeared years ago. This cannot be the case as Meisun was the one who put on the mask so as to check on the brothers at that time. Suddenly, a young boy emerges from the bushes...

The meaning of "one is all and all is one" is really profound. Although the brothers had known long ago that you need to have something in order to exchange for something under the rules of alchemy, they failed to understand this principle thoroughly and made the mistake of going ahead with the resurrection of their mother. Now that they have paid for their mistakes with their bodies, looking back at the past and taking time to consider whether to continue with the aim of rectifying what has happened is indeed essential. Since this has strengthened their determination to face the consequences regardless what happens, I guess Izumi will allow them to go and pursue their goal.

Now, the appearance of that boy who is indicated as Wrath on the official website, he seems to be quite evil-looking and I think he's related to the Homcrest tribe like Lust, Gluttony, Envy, Sloth and Greed. Who knows why he is alone on that island and he seems to have undergone some sort of a transformation there while Ed and Al are around.

I found another Tenipuri seiyuu among the cast of FMA and Ueda Yuji who played Jiro in Tenipuri and Morita in Hachikuro is actually the voice actor for Kimbly. I did find his voice very familiar when Kimbly first appeared but I didn't notice that it was him after all. And when I finally knew, I realised that he was also Urashima Keitaro in Love Hina after doing a check. I can't believe that I had been hearing his voice all along and yet couldn't link these characters together. Anyway, other than Kimbly, the other roles which Ueda had taken seem to be on the humourous, silly or cute side and I wonder if he's such a jovial person in real life. Kimbly is of course a baddie in FMA but who knows when he will appear again?
