I'm not sure at this point whether I'm going to do reviews of the past episodes but I'm sure I'll re-watch the whole series when it is completed. I might just discover things I've not noticed before during the first run. In the meantime, I'll just write a review of this long-awaited episode and upload the picture when I get home.
Anyway, this episode focuses a lot of Martin and Eva although we get a glimpse of Johan and see Tenma being walloped by Martin.
Tenma tries to look for Eva by asking Martin on her whereabouts but Martin beats him up and tells him not to appear again. Frankly speaking, I'm confused why Martin had to beat Tenma up. He seems to be overly protective of Eva and I get the feeling that he's emotionally attached to her. Maybe I won't call it love at this stage but more of an unexplained attraction to her. Or should I say that it's because they are just 2 lonely souls living without a purpose?
Eva is still going around attending parties when she suddenly tells Martin that her job is done and she won't be going for any parties again. Martin did notice that she was pointing at Johan during one of the parties where his employer approached Johan with another young man to chat. However, he didn't really take notice of Johan. Just as Eva is preparing to leave, his employer comes to her and brings her out for dinner while Martin goes back to his favourite hamburger joint for food.
Tenma comes to look for Martin again and the latter tells him about the parties Eva has been attending. Tenma doesn't believe that Eva is doing all these without any purpose and finally realises that Eva was being taken away to point out Johan to Martin's employer. Seeing Tenma's expression, Martin feels that Eva is in danger and rushes back to the restaurant where his employer passes him a gun to kill Eva.
Martin goes back to the hotel room and finds a dead drunk Eva who knows that he is back to kill her. Her pleas to get Martin to kill her make him remember his ex-girlfriend whom he had found in bed with another man after she was high on drugs. That girlfriend pleaded with Martin to kill her so as to lessen her guilt but Martin simply walked out of the room. However, she shot herself and Martin insisted that he killed her so that's why he ended up in prison.
Martin brings Eva to a hotel to hide and decides to use her invitations to attend the parties. He intends to find out what's going on and meets the guy which his employer had brought to Johan. After following him, Martin is invited to that guy's room as he recounts Martin's past and guesses correctly what happened to his ex-girlfriend. He also manages to deduce that Martin left his drunkard mother to freeze to death when he was 10 which destroys Martin's composure and logic. As he walks out of the hotel in a daze, he fails to see Johan walking past him and heading towards that guy's room.
Somehow, the conversation between the guy at the party and Martin seem to resemble what transpired between Richard Braun and Johan during the Munich arc. Richard was investigating Johan and the latter managed to invoke the guilt in him which led to his death. Although I doubt Johan pushed him over the building and am more inclined to the notion that Richard was being "brain-washed" by Johan and jumped over himself, Martin seems to be going through what Richard had gone through then. The only difference is that Johan didn't do it himself and the method looks similar. I wonder that guy at the party has been trained by Johan to do such things and he seems to be in awe of Johan's greatness. Just what exactly is Johan planning? We have about 15 episodes left and there are still so many mysteries to be resolved. I just hope that the anime can wrap up nicely and not spoil what has been nicely built up so far.
