In this case, Kindaichi and Miyuki are invited to the hometown of their ex-classmate Asagi Akie which is celebrating the lightning festival in summer. Akie used to be in the same class as them but she transferred back to her hometown in spring. Akie is the daughter of a famous pottery artist Asagi Tousei who passed away 4 months ago after committing suicide by piercing his throat with a sharp object. Akie lives with her stepmother Hazuki who married into the family 3 years ago and stepsister Shigure who's 2 years younger than her. However, her aunt Haruko dislikes Hazuki and Shigure whom she blames for turning her elder brother into a weirdo. Apparently, there's another reason why Haruko nurses a grudge against Hazuki because her ex-boyfriend Mutou Kyouichi who's an insect researcher seems to have feelings for Hazuki and ditched Haruko for Tousei's widow instead.
As in previous cases, everything will begin with a murder and in this instance, Mutou is the one who gets killed. This case is simple in the sense that the number of suspects is limited to the womenfolk in the Asagi family but the tricks used are the real puzzles waiting to be solved. In fact, at the end of the story, there is an unexpected twist to the truth behind the murder of Mutou and the supposed murder of Asagi Tousei where the survivors have to grapple with the tragic consequences that these events bring to their lives.
